A lot of you have probably heard about this revolutionary keyboard by now. It’s starting to pop up in a lot of new Android devices that are hitting the market (read: Droid X, Droid 2, Samsung Galaxy S etc…) and is vastly becoming one of the most popular keyboard replacements on Android devices.
For those of you who don’t know what it is, Swype is a new keyboard for touch screens that was designed by one of the co-founders of the T9 predictive text that all old phones used to use. You can still use Swype in the old fashion of pressing each key individually and it provides a nice feedback so you know you’ve pressed a button, but where Swype shines is its new predictive way of typing. Instead of pressing each letter, you run your finger along each letter in the word in sequence and it draws a line connecting them and then figures out what word you were trying to type!! It’s that simple!
The fact that this works at all amazes us, but the ability for it to recognize big words (Mississauga), uncommon words and more recently they’ve even added punctuation recognition as well!
The other really nice thing about Swype is that you can customize it. You can change options like how long it will wait for your input, how long of a line to draw on the screen, how fast it will register or should it take more time for error checking? It is truly a robust application!
Previously Swype was only available in a closed beta that we were fortunate enough to be included in, but more recently it has been opened to the public by registering at their site (listed at the source link below) and downloading the installer that gets and installs the .APK for your phone. After that, you can start swyping away!
It’s hard to describe just how amazing this keyboard is, we use it every day on our devices and are lost without it, so we think you owe it to yourself to at least check out one of the videos to see what it’s really like.
