In a true life Star Wars/Star Trek moment it seems that we should be looking to the stars for more of our answers and our futures, according to Steven Hawkings at least.
In a recent statement he talked about Mankind’s chance of survival on Earth and how our only real chance is colonizing space. “The human race shouldn’t have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet,†Hawkings said on August 9th in an interview with website Big Think.
“Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space,†he added.
Kind of a chilling thought eh? Many of our fantasies coming to life as thousands of people embark across the galaxy on huge spaceships that can travel at light speed a la Star Trek/Star Wars.
He also went on to talk about how “Our population and our use of the finite resources of planet Earth are growing exponentially, along with our technical ability to change the environment for good or ill.”
Based on this thought, he is indeed for “personed†(politically correct term for manned) space flights as opposed to completely automated ones.
We need to learn and experience and find a way to spread out across the galaxy to survive. Pretty heavy stuff but definitely something to think about for a long while.
