Now we all know that competition is good for consumers because it makes large companies strive to be better and to one up each other and give lower prices and all those wonderful things, it also can lead to some pretty funny rivalries as well as we’ve recently seen with Steve Jobs presentation about the new iPods and such yesterday.
Steve decided to point out their numbers for sales in true Apple fashion saying that Apple was activating 230,000 devices a day. He went on to say that “We think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers” which was clearly a poke at Google’s Eric Schmidt who last month said Google was activating over 200,000 devices a day and growing.
Well of course Google would not stand for this and a Google spokesperson told cnn “The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services”, basically saying that Steve was lying.
Now, we have no real way of knowing who is lying to who and what the real numbers are, but it makes for a good argument.
One thing we’d like to know is if Steve’s 130,000 iOS activations counts iPods, iPhones and iPads all together because last I checked, Android wasn’t on any MP3 players by itself. Who knows?
